The day on which the siege of Sarajevo began was one of the happiest days of my life! It was shortly before my 16th birthday. I woke up, noticed I had slept in and started to panic. In the living room, my parents solemnly told me that school was cancelled. (bf) Im Fokus der an der Elfenbeinküste aufgewachsenen und mehrfach ausgezeichneten Schweizer Fotografin Flurina Rothenberger steht seit je die Jugend. Neben ihrer Lehrtätigkeit in der Schweiz und in Südafrika realisiert sie seit einigen Jahren das viel beachtete und weltweit vertriebene NICE Magazin, welches Arbeiten der jungen Generation von Fotografinnen, Gestalterinnen und Textern in Afrika präsentiert. «Es geht darum, einerseits den kreativen Jungen Afrikas eine Stimme zu geben und andererseits, einen Ort zu portraitieren», sagt die 42-Jährige. Dies geschieht in einem bislang einzigartigen Arbeitsprozess, nämlich zusammen mit aufstrebenden Talenten vor Ort. Getragen wird das Projekt von dem von der Fotografin mitbegründeten Verein Klaym, welcher an den jeweiligen Produktionsorten Ausbildungsprogramme – von Fotografie- über Schreib-, Siebdruck- bis hin zu Grafik-, Blog- und Film-Workshops – für die Jugendlichen durchführt. Während der drei- bis sechsmonatigen Ausbildungszeit entsteht jeweils ein Magazin, in dem transnationale junge afrikanische Perspektiven, Stile und Geschichten vorgestellt werden: Das erste Heft entstand 2016 in Pemba, Mosambik, das zweite 2018 in Abidjan an der Elfenbeinküste und im Juli dieses Jahres erschien das dritte NICE Magazin mit Geschichten aus Katlehong, einem Township östlich von Johannesburg in Südafrika.

Um Gewalt an Frauen zu thematisieren, geht die bolivianische Schauspielgruppe Kory Warmis neue Wege. Sie konfrontiert das Publikum mit den eigenen Erfahrungen von Missbrauch und Vergewaltigung – und bricht damit erfolgreich ein Tabu.

Viele Musiker nutzen heute Internet und Social Media geschickt, um ihre Musik selbst zu produzieren und diese zu vermarkten. Das eröffnet auch Künstlerinnen aus dem globalen Süden neue Möglichkeiten. Im Oktober traf sich die Szene zum ersten Forum für «Do-it-yourself-artists» in Zürich.
